Messy Minesweeper

Created for Tech Core: Useless Machine Taught by Professor Blair Simmons
This project started with an obsession. Something about the pure logical perfection of Minesweeper pulled me in. Once it did, I got good at it fast. Fast enough that classmates watching me play would pause and say, "that's the nerdiest thing I've ever seen at an art school."
But eventually, classic Minesweeper stopped being enough. Having exhausted what the original had to offer, I wanted to build something I could enjoy on my own terms. I became curious about a different question: what happens when Minesweeper is allowed to be imperfect?
That curiosity became Messy Minesweeper, a progressively broken version of the game that systematically dismantles everything that makes the original satisfying. Each mode introduces a new layer of dysfunction, ordered by difficulty and designed to frustrate in increasingly creative ways.
The game starts with a faithful recreation of classic Minesweeper, then gradually falls apart. Numbers drift out of their cells and rotate at odd angles. The numbers themselves are rewritten in randomized scripts, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Vietnamese: readable if you know them, disorienting if you don't. Clicking and flagging swap without warning. Mines begin to move, bouncing up and down their columns like buoys on water, switching positions every half second. Pac-Men wander the board and reclaim cells you've already cleared. Every five seconds, the whole board reshuffles. The final mode combines everything at once.
The project sits somewhere between game design and an absolutely useless machine. The joke is that the logic is still there. It's just been made as inconvenient as possible to use.
